Castaic Lake Fishing Guide Report 09-23-2016 … High North winds plagued most of the days this week at Castaic Lake and the lake was closed on Friday the 23rd. The back of the ski arm near the buoy line continues to be the hotspot for most of the Striped Bass action. There has been sporadic boils during the morning ours and smaller topwater poppers with feathered rear trebles are proving to be a better choice than walking baits or swimbaits.
There is an abundance of shad all over the area and most of it is in the 1 to 2 inch size. A good pattern when there aren't any surface fish working at Castiac Lake is trolling the same area with small jerkbaits, crankbaits and umbrella rigs equipped with smaller, shad-style swimbaits. Most of the fish are down 10'-15' in the water column. There are good numbers of Stripers in this area in two schools. One has fish running about two pounds and the other has fish in the five pound class.
There has also been some quality four and five pound Largemouth Bass caught on the same topwater popper pattern. Look for single baitfish splashes in the pockets and cuts.
