The weather and the fishing have great this month. Lake Casitas is full of schooling and puddling shad. The shad have been up and rather easy to net for almost a month now. As most of you know this live shad makes wonderful bait for bass fishing. You have to make the bait yourself. I have been guiding clients about 3-4 days a week. I have been able to make fresh bait everyday and the results have been wonderful. What is kind of cool is that we have been getting quite a few large fish on the shad. It seems like everyday my clients get a shot at a 5-10 pound fish. We have been fishing the live shad on a medium action spinning rod. You can also fish with your crappie or trout rod to add a little more excitement to the battle. Six pound test is best, and your line should be regular monofilement in the green color. All during the day you can see bass busting shad in the back of pockets and up on flats. A topwater bait, like a Super Spook has been good for for topwater action throughout the day. Of coarse we always have fishing on the plastics year round. It seems like the drop shot worm with a 12-16 inch leader is best. The grass at Lake Casitas has just begun to grow. So that drop shot worm is always best when you have that summer grass. The lake level is good, about 20 feet below full pool. The water tempetures have been in the mid 70's. Daytime temps have been in the high 70's to low 80's. Absolutly fantasic on shore breezes from the pacific ocean every afternoon have really made this So. Cal. bass fishery a pleasure to be on.
