Fishing has been Fantastic! It's that simple. The first wave of spawing fish made there way to the shallows in early March. We had a mild winter, so the fish are up and bedding just a bit early this year. Fish have been caught on a varity of baits. Far and away, sight fishing has been the best bet. Since we have had moderate rainfall through the winter and spring, the water has stayed really clear. On a sunny day with no wind you can see 8-9 feet deep. We are seeing a tremendous number of fish, and all the fish we catch are in real good shape. Great color, and very healthy looking. The water temperature as of this report is in the mid 60's. The lake level is in good shape, just 10 feet below full pool. On windy days when it's tough to sight fish, we have been catching lot's of fish on drop shot, and split shot plastic's. The swimbait fishing has been poor. The fish have been very bottom focused. This is typical of the spawn season. Therefore the worm fishing and sight fishing has dominated. The shad have not shown up on a consistent basis yet. As the water warms over the next few weeks, we will begin to make shad in the mornings. Right now the fishing is so good on the plastics, we have just not had time to look for shad. The lake opens at 6am, but there's no need to get out at sun up. The best fishing has been from 8am-4pm. When that sun gets up and warms the water, the fish just "jump up on the bank". We have had wonderful weather this spring, with very little wind. Bring a jacket and sweat pants for the morning, it's a bit cool in the AM. I must say fishing a lake with limited access like Casitas is pretty wonderful. It's like fishing your own private lake.
