February means rain. If we get rain at Casitas, this is our biggest month. That's a good thing on two fronts. The lake is down about 18 below capacity (full) as of today's date. We have quite a bit of rain in the forecast this month. Let's hope the lake fills. It's always great at Casitas, but when that water floods those reeds, shore grass, and blow downs, it get's really fun! Let's keep our fingers crossed.
There have been patches of shad to scoop for those that work at it. The "candy" as always has been great for the 2-5 pounds fish. It's lot's of fun. And allows everyone a chance at some action.
As always in February, the swimbait is king. My choice is the Huddelston. It is not as important to try to plan your trip around the trout plants, as it is to pick a "nasty" day. Hey, my clients have had one of those monsters light up there swimbait on a dead flat, sunny day at high noon. But if I had to pick a day to catch a big one on the swimmer, it would be a day with a little, wind, rain, or cloud cover.
