I wish I could tell you some extraordinary story that the fishing has changed but that's just not the case. Absolutely lights out fishing with no boat traffic to be found as the striped bass fishing marches on at Castaic Lake. It's simply a matter of understanding that this year is much different than last. Last year fishing chunk sardine was the hot deal for everyone and we had fantastic fishing for striped bass. That bite just never developed this year as the fish are suspended this year out in open water and anglers willing to do the work can have fantastic success. Straight up the umbrella rig on the troll is without question the most productive technique on the lake. We're beginning to book trips solid but we still have one or two openings each and every week. We are once again utilizing a custom umbrella rig and each and every day we are locating the fish in a different area of the lake. What's been really fun is watching anglers received for 30 to 40 strikes a day. We're only hooking around 50% of the fish that bite us but that's pretty typical for stripers on the troll. Biggest problem this week was the lake was closed Thursday and Friday due to debris on the launch ramp. This morning Saturday the launch ramp was absolutely beautiful by the time we pulled the boat off the water at 3 PM. Water temperatures are holding steady at 55° and there has not been a trout plant in in the last seven days. Below is a picture from Saturday morning January 17, 2015. On the left is David and on the right is Justin from Huntington Beach with a small part of their catch over 15 striped bass on the fishing guide trip with Rich Tauber. A custom umbrella rig did the trick.
